HERE IS THE REASON WHY STUDENTS ARE FAILING TO COME TO GHANA AMIDST THE WAR BETWEEN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

Dr Lawrence Tetteh, an economist and international evangelist, has urged Ghanaian students in Ukraine to take advantage of the government's evacuation exercise.

His remark comes after reports that some Ghanaians have refused to return home from Ukraine, although the government had purchased tickets for them.

On Tuesday's episode of JoyNews' The Pulse, he added that if the kids decline to take advantage of the gesture, they will be left stranded until the evacuation exercise is through.

Students who refuse to be evacuated by the government risk having their immigration records erased, which means it could take a long time to receive a visa to re-enter the country once the current issue is handled, according to Dr Tetteh.

He described the situation in Ukraine as "extremely dangerous," and urged parents with children in the country to tell them to "wise up" and join the evacuation process.

"A lot of young men and women are listening to other voices and creating a make-believe situation for themselves," he said.

"Ukraine is not a Schengen country," he continued. As a result, the visa you obtain for Ukraine is only valid in Ukraine. Hungary is a Schengen country, which means that a Hungarian visa will allow you to travel across Europe. The Czech Republic is also a Schengen member, however, Ukraine is not. As a result, the majority of students in Ukraine are somewhat constrained."

In a meeting with relatives of Ghanaians in and near Ukraine, Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey urged them to encourage their wards to use this evacuation effort to return to Ghana.

Concerns have been raised about how the government will evacuate Ghanaians from the troubled country following Russia's invasion since last week.

According to the Ministry, roughly 500 Ghanaians had been evacuated from Ukraine to neighbouring countries as of March 1.

Those countries include Poland, Romania, Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia, according to information acquired by the Ministry.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the first group of Ghanaians evacuated from Ukraine, including students, landed in Accra.

Due to the closure of Ukraine's airspace since the start of the crisis in the country, these people were rescued by land through neighbouring countries.
