All medical students at the Montefiore Albert Einstein institution of Medicine will be able to receive free tuition thanks to a $1 billion donation, the institution said on Monday.

This donation is the biggest ever given to an American medical school. Dr. Ruth Gottesman, the head of the Einstein Board of Trustees, delivered the statement.

"This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it," Dr. Yaron Tomer, the Stanley and Marilyn Katz Dean at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, stated in a press release. "Additionally, it will free up and lift our students, enabling them to pursue projects and ideas that might otherwise be prohibitive."

The historic news also permits existing fourth-year students to obtain a reimbursement for their tuition for the spring 2024 semester. Furthermore, as of this August, all students will be admitted to the college at no cost.

Dr. Gottesman's historic and transformative contribution has left me very grateful, Philip O. Ozuah, President and CEO of Montefiore Einstein, remarked. "When we realize that access is the route to greatness, I think we can turn the tide on the history of healthcare. With this donation, Dr. Gottesman will ensure our core goal of improving human health and fund excellence forever."

As of the 2023-24 school year, Einstein is home to 737 M.D. students, 209 Ph.D. students, 124 students in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program, and approximately 239 postdoctoral research fellows.

Officials say the gift is intended to attract a talented and diverse pool of students who may not otherwise have the means to pursue a medical education.
